What is domain age?
Domain age is how long a domain name has been registered — counted from the day it was first created at the registry, not from the day a website appeared on it.
A domain registered in 2005 and parked ever since is twenty years old. A domain registered last month with a busy site on it is one month old. The registry only records the registration.
How to check the age of a domain

What the result shows you
Alongside the age, every lookup returns:
- Registered
- The date the domain was first created.
- Expires
- When the current registration runs out.
- Updated
- The last change to the record — usually a renewal, a transfer, or a nameserver change.
- Registrar
- The company the domain is registered through right now.
- Status codes
- What can be done with the domain. clientTransferProhibited is a normal lock. redemptionPeriod or pendingDelete mean it is expiring.
- Nameservers
- Where the domain's DNS is hosted. Parking nameservers usually mean nothing is running on it.
Domain age is not website age
These get mixed up constantly and they are different numbers.
Domain age is when the name was registered. Website age is when someone actually put a site on it. A fifteen-year-old domain can have been empty for fourteen of those years.
To see what was actually published and when, look the domain up in the Internet Archive. Use the two together — the registration date tells you the earliest possible start, the Archive tells you what really happened.
Does domain age help SEO?
Not on its own. Google has said plainly that domain age is not a ranking factor.
What old domains often have is everything they picked up along the way — links, mentions, a crawl history. That is what helps, and a young domain with the same links would do just as well.
So if you are buying a domain for SEO, check what it earned, not how long it sat there. An aged domain with no backlinks gives you nothing a fresh registration would not.
Why some domains show no date
If the age comes back blank, it is almost always one of these:
- The registry hides it
- .de, .uk, .eu, .nl and .ch do not publish creation dates at all. No tool can get around that.
- The domain is not registered
- No registration means no creation date. You will see "Not registered" instead.
- It was registered minutes ago
- Brand-new registrations can take a few hours to show up.

Why does the creation date say nothing?
Some registries — .de, .uk, .eu, .nl, .ch — do not publish creation dates. The rest of the record still comes back.
Does buying a dropped domain reset its age?
Yes. Re-registering a domain that expired creates a new creation date, and the old age disappears from the record.
Is the data live?
Yes. Every lookup queries the registry at that moment. Nothing is served from a stored list.
