Domain Availability MCP

A remote MCP server that lets Claude, Cursor, Codex and other agents check which domain names are free to register, with live registry lookups and prices.

1. Add the server to your agent

Run in a terminal
claude mcp add -s user --transport http domain-availability https://namechan.com/mcp

Works as it is: no account needed, within a per-address limit.

2. Optional: a free API key

Sign in and create a key: calls then count against your account rather than your network address, with a larger allowance, as when you sign in on this site.

3. Ask

“Find a short name for a budgeting app and check which .com and .ai domains are still free.”

A domain availability MCP server for AI agents

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is how an AI agent calls tools outside the model. Namechan runs a remote MCP server that answers one question agents get wrong when they guess: can this domain name be registered right now?

Every answer comes from a live registry lookup (RDAP or WHOIS), not from the model's memory. Free names come back with the first-year and renewal price and a link to register; taken names come back with their registration date.

What the server gives your agent

Four tools, all read-only. The agent picks the right one from the tool descriptions; you only ask in plain language.

check_domains
A list of complete names, such as acme.com, getacme.io and acme.ai, checked in one call. Each result says available, taken, reserved, unsupported or unknown, with price and a register link for the free ones.
check_name
One keyword across many extensions at once. Without a list it tries .com, .ai, .net, .org, .io, .co, .xyz, .app, .dev and .run.
whois_lookup
The registry record of one name: creation and expiry dates, age, registrar, status codes and nameservers. Useful when the name you want is taken and you need to know whether it might come free.
get_usage
How many calls have been used this minute and this hour, and how many are left: for the account when a key is used, for the address when not.

Setting it up

Paste the snippet for your client above and it works straight away, no account needed. Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code connect to the server URL directly over Streamable HTTP. Claude Desktop and Codex start the small domain-availability-mcp package with npx, which forwards to the same server.

Once it is connected, ask for what you want: "find me a two-syllable name for a note-taking app and check the .com", or "which of these ten names are still free?". The agent writes the candidates; the server tells it which ones exist.

Why the agent needs a lookup at all

A language model cannot know whether a domain is registered. Its training data is months old, most registrations never appear in text, and names are registered and dropped every day. Asked directly, a model will confidently call a taken name available. With the MCP server it checks first and only suggests names that can actually be bought.

The server is also careful in the other direction. When a registry does not answer in time, the result is "unknown", never "available", and the tool instructions tell the agent not to present it as free.

Free use, and API keys

Without a key, the server is free to use within a limit per network address, the same as checking names on this website without signing in. Listing the tools and every lookup work the same way; only the limit differs.

For more, sign in and create a free API key. Calls with a key count against your account instead of your address, with a larger allowance, the same as signing in on this website, and shared by all of the account's keys. The get_usage tool shows what is left. Keys can be revoked at any time from the API keys page.

Prefer a packaged workflow over raw tools? The domain availability skill teaches an agent how to shortlist names, not just how to look them up.

Frequently asked questions

Is the domain availability MCP server free?

Yes. It works without an account, within a limit per network address. A free API key, created after signing in, gives you a larger allowance tied to your account instead.

Which clients does it work with?

Any client that supports remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP: Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf and others. Clients that only start local servers, such as Claude Desktop's config file and Codex, use the domain-availability-mcp npm package, which bridges to the same server.

How accurate is the availability result?

It is the registry's own answer at the moment of the check, read over RDAP or WHOIS, with DNS used as a fast hint. A name can still be registered by someone else between the check and your purchase, so register promptly once you decide.

Does it buy or register domains?

No. All tools are read-only. Free names come with a link to a registrar where you complete the purchase yourself.

What does "reserved" or "unknown" mean?

Reserved means the name has no registration but the registry will not sell it. Unknown means the registry did not answer in time; it is not a sign the name is free, and the agent should check again before relying on it.
