How to check when a domain expires

If the date has already passed, it tells you how long ago — which matters more than the date once a domain is on its way out.
This is a one-off check. If what you want is to be warned before your own domains lapse, set a calendar reminder a month before the registry date below, and turn auto-renew on at your registrar. We do not send expiry alerts.
Two expiry dates, and which one to trust
The registry holds one date. Your registrar often shows a different, earlier one.
That is deliberate: registrars stop trying to auto-renew before the registry deadline so they have time to retry a failed card.
This page shows the registry date. Treat your registrar's date as your deadline and the registry date as the real cut-off.
Just renewed and still seeing the old date? Registrars send renewals to the registry in batches, so the record can lag a day or two. Your receipt is the confirmation, not this page.
What happens after a domain expires
A domain does not become free the moment it expires. For .com and most other generic extensions it goes through this, taking roughly 75 days in total:
- 1. Grace period
- Up to 45 days, set by the registrar. The site usually stops working early on. The owner can still renew at the normal price.
- 2. Redemption
- 30 days. The owner can get it back, but the registrar charges a restore fee — often 80–200 USD on top of the renewal.
- 3. Pending delete
- 5 days. Nothing can be done by anyone.
- 4. Released
- The domain is available again. Popular ones get caught within seconds by drop-catching services.
What the status codes mean
Most of them are routine. These are the ones worth recognising:
- ok / active
- Normal. Nothing to worry about.
- clientTransferProhibited
- A standard registrar lock. Present on most healthy domains.
- autoRenewPeriod
- Expired, but still in the registrar's grace window. Renewable at the normal price.
- redemptionPeriod
- Expired and past grace. Only the owner can get it back, and only by paying a restore fee.
- pendingDelete
- Final five days before the domain is released. Nothing can be done.
- clientHold / serverHold
- Pulled out of DNS by the registrar or registry. Often a billing problem or an abuse complaint.
Why some domains show no expiry date
A handful of country registries — .de, .uk, .eu, .nl, .ch — do not publish expiry dates. Status and nameservers still come back, but the date will be blank.
This is their policy, not a limitation of the lookup.

Why does my registrar show a different date?
Registrars stop auto-renew attempts before the registry deadline, so their date is usually earlier. Theirs is the deadline to act by; the registry date is the real cut-off.
I just renewed. Why is the old date still showing?
Renewals reach the registry in batches, so the record can lag a day or two. Your registrar receipt is the confirmation.
Can I get my domain back after it expires?
During the grace window, yes, at the normal price. During redemption, yes, but with a restore fee of roughly 80–200 USD. Once it reaches pending delete, no.
How long until an expired domain is available again?
About 75 days for .com and similar: up to 45 days of grace, 30 days of redemption, then 5 days of pending delete. The grace part varies by registrar.
Why did my site stop working before the domain expired?
Registrars usually pull an expired domain out of DNS within the first days of the grace period. People often notice an expiry because their email breaks.
Why is there no expiry date for my .de domain?
DENIC does not publish expiry dates, and several other European registries do the same.
Can you alert me before my domain expires?
No — this is a one-off check, not a monitoring service. Turn on auto-renew at your registrar, keep the card on file current, and set a calendar reminder a month before the registry date. Most lost domains are a failed payment nobody saw.
